McGwire hits two shots off Schilling

PHILADELPHIA -- Mark McGwirehit his 537th, 538th and 539th home runs in Thursday night's 7-2 victory over the Phillies, moving past Mickey Mantle into eighth place on the career list.

McGwire leads the majors with 17 homers this year.

The St. Louis Cardinals slugger broke a tie with Mantle when he connected for a three-run drive in the first inning off Philadelphia's Curt Schilling. The shot deep into the left-center field seats at Veterans Stadium was McGwire's 15th homer of the season.

McGwire then hit a two-run homer into the upper deck in the second inning off Schilling.

In the eighth, McGwire hit a two-run homer off Wayne Gomes, giving him his fifth career three-homer game -- and first since hitting three at Veterans Stadium on May 19, 1998 -- and a career-high seven RBI.

It was McGwire's 64th multi-homer game, moving him into second place ahead of Willie Mays. Babe Ruth is first with 72.

Next up for McGwire on the home run list is former Phillies star Mike Schmidt at 548.

McGwire is 4-for-17 lifetime off Schilling with all four hits being homers, including one April 30.

McGwire had been 0-for-6 with four strikeouts in the three-game series against the Phillies.
