Big Mac Named NL Player of the Week

Mon, Aug 18, 1997 - NEW YORK (SCN/AP) - Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire, who struggled during his first week in the NL, and Red Sox second baseman John Valentin won major league player of the week honors for Aug. 11-17.

McGwire batted .421 with four home runs and eight RBIs last week. He had the 40th multi-homer game of his career on Aug. 13 against New York, and two game-tying ninth inning homers. Among the nominated NL players were Colorado's Ellis Burks and New York's John Olerud.
